How to Choose Your Word of the Year: A Prayerful Guide for Christian Women

Choosing a Word of the Year isn’t about picking the prettiest word or following a trend—it’s about listening.

God often speaks softly, and this process invites us to slow down enough to hear Him.

Step 1: Reflect on the Year Behind You

Before looking ahead, look back.
Ask yourself:

  • What challenged me this year?

  • Where did God stretch or strengthen me?

  • What themes kept repeating?

Sometimes your word is a continuation of healing, growth, or trust God has already begun.

Step 2: Pray Intentionally

Bring your reflections to God. Ask Him:
“What do You want to grow in me this year?”
“What do I need to release or receive?”

Sit with Scripture. Pay attention to words or verses that stir your heart.

Step 3: Write Without Editing

Set a timer for five minutes and write any words that come to mind. Don’t judge or narrow yet. Let the Holy Spirit lead before logic steps in.

Step 4: Choose the Word That Brings Peace

Your word may feel stretching—but it should also bring a sense of peace or clarity. Trust that God knows what lies ahead, even when you don’t.

The Word of the Year section in the Plans to Prosper planner gently walks you through reflection, prayer, and discernment—without rushing the process.

Your word doesn’t need to explain the year. It just needs to anchor you in it.
